A grade of A or B must be earned in all course work counting toward the counseling degree program.
In addition to completing the coursework, candidates must pass the TExES School Counselor exam to become certified school counselors in Texas.
To sit for the state exam, a candidate must be admitted to the Educator Preparation Program, meet academic competency requirements and receive approval to test from the school counseling program coordinator. Pursuant to the Texas Education Code (TEC), §22.083, candidates must undergo a criminal history background check prior to employment as an educator. A person who is enrolled or planning to enroll in a State Board for Educator Certification-approved educator preparation program or planning to take a certification examination may request a preliminary criminal history evaluation letter regarding the person’s potential ineligibility for certification due to a conviction or deferred adjudication for a felony or misdemeanor offense.
Certification - School Counselor
The program is recognized by the Texas Education Agency as an approved Educator Preparation Program for School Counselors. All 60 credits of the master's degree are completed at the graduate level. Students must complete the core courses for the master's degree plus one concentration content area.
Eligibility for School Counseling Certification: To receive recommendation for school counselor certification through UNT Dallas, students must:
Successfully complete the 60-credit Master of Science in Clinical School Counseling degree and 160 hours of supervised school counseling internship experience.
Submit certification application and fee to the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
Submit fingerprinting for Federal background check through TEA.
Pass all appropriate state certification exams which includes the TExES 252 School Counselor Exam.
